VPC / VS2005 / VMWare Windows OS Bootdisks
Virtual PC 2004 supports capture images of floppy disks for use as a “virtual” floppy disk inside the guest OS. To capture a floppy disk image for use inside a Virtual PC, just right-click the floppy disk icon in the status bar of a running Virtual PC and select “Capture Floppy Disk Image…” These are pre-created images of popular boot disks for your use. They are widely available from the Microsoft site, but have been packaged in .ZIP files here for your convienence.
For Windows 2000, these are the same images that are also contained on the Windows 2000 CD in the “BOOTDISKS“ folder. You can simply rename these .IMG files to .VHD files and they will work just fine with Virtual PC 2004.
As-is, these images can be used by Virtual PC 2004 and Virtual Server 2005. A little known fact is that MSFT virtualization technologies and VMWare virtualization technologies actually use the same floppy image format. So, to use these images with VMWare, just rename the files to *.IMG and VMWare will be able to recognize them as a valid floppy image.
Note: Unfortunately, Windows Server 2003 does not include boot disks for starting the installation from a floppy disk. This is a change from the Windows Server 2000 version of the product. The best way to start the Windows Server 2003 installation from a floppy disk is to use a standard Windows 98 boot disk and run the installation from that. There is a great article on using a Win98 boot disk to install Windows Server 2003 at http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBP/tip7500/rh7522.htm.
